How to Travel Light: The Minimalist Packing Guide
Checking bags wastes time, costs money, and adds stress to travel. Mastering the art of packing light transforms your travel experience. Here’s how to do it.
The One-Bag Rule
Challenge yourself to pack everything into a single carry-on backpack (35–40L). This forces ruthless curation and eliminates the “what if” mentality that leads to overpacking.
The Capsule Wardrobe Approach
Choose 5–7 clothing items in neutral colors that all work together. Pack for half the days you’ll be away — you can always do laundry. Merino wool is ideal: odor-resistant, quick-drying, and packs small.
Electronics Essentials Only
Laptop, phone, earbuds, one universal charger, and a compact power bank. Resist packing “entertainment devices” you won’t use. A single USB-C cable can now power everything.
Toiletries
Use solid toiletries (shampoo bars, solid sunscreen) — they’re TSA-friendly and won’t leak. If staying at hotels, skip what they provide. Pack only 100ml liquids.
The Roll Technique
Rolling clothes compresses them better than folding and reduces wrinkles. Use packing cubes to organize categories and compress contents further.
